Trappist
A beer designation reserved to ales brewed under the auspices and on the premises of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (also known as the Trappists). As of this posting only 7 monasteries are permitted to produce ale labeled with the Trappist designation. These are Westvleteren, Orval, West Malle, Chimay, Achel, and Rochefort in Belgium and La Trappe in the Netherlands. The appellation of Trappist achieved its current legal status in 1997.
