Russian Stout

Russian stout.

    In Britain, a very strong stout brewed originally from 1780 to World War I by the London-based Anchor Brewery (now part of Courage) for exportation to St. Petersburg in Russia. Present-day Russian stout, brewed by Courage, is nonpasteurized and matured in casks for two months and afterward bottle-aged for one full year before it is marketed. It is brewed from an original wort gravity of 1101.8 and contains about 10.5 percent alcohol by volume. Syn: Imperial Russian stout; imperial stout.
