German for beer. German beers are classed in three legal categories: (1) starkbiers are brewed from an original gravity of 16 °B or more and contain at least 5 percent alcohol by weight (6.2 percent alcohol by volume); (2) vollbiers are medium-strength beers prepared from original gravities of 11-14 °B and contain 3.5-4.5 percent alcohol by weight (4.4-5.65 percent alcohol by volume); and (3) schankbiers are brewed from original gravities of 7-8 °B and contain 2-3 percent alcohol by weight (2.5-3.7 percent alcohol by volume).
