1. Pure, water-free ethyl alcohol. Specific gravity: 0.79359; boiling point: 173.12 °F (78.4 °C). The American standard is 200 proof whereas the British standard is 175.1 proof. Syn: anhydrous alcohol. 2. The total amount of alcohol contained in a beverage.
